GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
GAF underlayment and deck repair in Riverside typically runs $900 to $2,800 installed, depending on how many deck sheets need replacement and which GAF underlayment product goes back on. We stock GAF FeltBuster, Deck-Armor, and Tiger Paw on the truck, and most underlayment-only jobs are done in a single day. Most Riverside homeowners discover underlayment failure the hard way: during a re-roof when the old shingles come off and the decking underneath is soft, stained, or rotted through in patches. What looks like a shingle problem on the surface is often an underlayment and deck failure underneath.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF underlayment isn’t tied to one shingle line. It’s the layer between your deck and whatever shingle product you have, whether that’s Timberline HDZ, Timberline UHDZ, Royal Sovereign, or Glenwood. The deck is the plywood or OSB sheathing nailed to your rafters. Underlayment goes on top of that. Shingles go on top of the underlayment. When we strip a roof for a full replacement, we’re looking at the condition of all three layers before anything new goes down.
The compatibility question that matters most is this: synthetic underlayment like GAF FeltBuster and Deck-Armor can go under any shingle line. Felt-based options work too, but synthetic holds up better in Riverside’s specific climate, which we’ll get into. One gotcha we see regularly: if your original roof was installed before roughly 2010, there’s a good chance it has 3/8-inch decking instead of the modern standard 7/16-inch or 1/2-inch. 3/8-inch decking flexes under foot and fails faster, especially between trusses. If we find 3/8-inch deck, replacing it changes the whole scope and price of the job. That’s a spec issue most homeowners never hear about until the roof is already open.
We also install decking and underlayment that works with other manufacturer systems, including Owens Corning and CertainTeed, so if you’re cross-shopping or your roof has mixed materials from a previous patch job, we can match what’s already there.
How to identify what you have: Look for the GAF label on any exposed underlayment in your attic, or check your original roofing contract if you kept it. If you can’t find either, we’ll identify it when we inspect, before any price goes on paper.

Signs Your GAF Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on ceilings or rafters in the attic. When shingles lift or crack, water gets past them and sits on the underlayment. If the underlayment has deteriorated, that water reaches the deck and eventually your ceiling. In Riverside, we see this most after heavy winter rain or when Santa Ana winds rip shingles loose and expose the layer beneath.
- Soft spots or spongy feel when walking the roof. This is deck rot, almost always caused by water trapped between the underlayment and the deck. The underlayment’s job is to shed water, but once it’s compromised, the plywood underneath absorbs moisture and loses structural strength. This is a safety issue, not just a leak issue.
- Granules from shingles collecting in gutters during dry weather. It’s normal for an older roof to shed some granules, but excessive granule loss means the shingle’s protective layer is failing. When shingles fail, the underlayment is the only remaining barrier, and in Riverside’s summer heat, that barrier degrades faster once it’s exposed to direct UV through the cracks.
- Visible crimping, wrinkles, or tears in underlayment at the eaves or valleys. You can sometimes see this from a ladder at the roof edge. Synthetic underlayment that was installed too tight can wrinkle as it settles. Felt underlayment that’s old will tear at fastener points. Valleys take the most water flow on any roof and are usually the first place underlayment fails in Riverside.
- Interior paint bubbling or peeling on upper-floor ceilings, particularly after wind-driven rain. This tells us water has traveled past the shingles, through the underlayment, and into the deck. By the time you see paint fail, the deck is almost certainly compromised in that section.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the real range for Riverside homes, and what drives it:
- Underlayment-only replacement on a small section (under 200 sq ft), with minor deck patching: $900 to $1,600. This covers tear-off of shingles in that section, underlayment replacement with GAF synthetic, and up to two sheets of decking.
- Partial re-deck with full underlayment replacement on one roof plane: $1,600 to $2,800. More deck sheets, more fasteners, more time.
- Full re-deck and underlayment replacement, including GAF synthetic underlayment and new shingles: This runs higher and is typically part of a full roof replacement quote. We’ll give you that number separately, on paper, before anything starts.
The range depends on deck damage, existing deck thickness, roof pitch, and how many layers of old roofing have to come off first. Labor is the largest cost driver. GAF synthetic underlayment itself runs roughly $0.18 to $0.30 per square foot at wholesale, and decking is $0.50 to $0.75 per square foot in this market. You’re paying mostly for the crew, the tear-off labor, and the chance that more deck damage gets uncovered once the roof is open. That’s why we write the price before we start and tell you what a change order looks like if we find rot that wasn’t visible during the estimate. Every job gets our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing, and that’s on Brennan Roofing Co Riverside, not a manufacturer warranty.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground or a ladder: visible underlayment at the eaves, granule buildup in gutters, interior stains on upper ceilings, and softness if you walk a low-slope section near a valley. You should not strip shingles, pull up underlayment, or cut out decking yourself. Removing decking without knowing how the load path runs can put a foot through the roof or through a ceiling below. And underlayment installs that aren’t lapped and fastened to the manufacturer’s pattern will leak, even under a brand-new shingle layer.
Travis Oakley has spent roughly two decades roofing homes and commercial buildings across the Inland Empire, and the pattern he sees on DIY attempts repeats: the underlayment gets installed backwards, the laps run the wrong direction, and water runs uphill into the house. It’s the same failure every time, and it costs more to fix than the original repair would have. If you want to look, look. If you want it fixed, call (341) 208-3988 and we’ll get you a written estimate before any work starts.
FAQs
A quality GAF synthetic like Deck-Armor lasts 25 to 30 years in Riverside’s climate, while felt underlayment realistically gives you 15 to 20 years in our heat. The limiting factor here is UV-degradation through cracked shingles and repeated thermal expansion cycles from summer heat. Call (341) 208-3988 for an inspection if your roof is past the 20-year mark.
Underlayment is always replaced, not repaired. It’s a barrier product; patching it doesn’t restore the continuous water-shedding surface. Decking can sometimes be spot-repaired by replacing just the rotted sheets, but only if the surrounding deck is sound. If the rot extends to framing connections, the framing has to be addressed too. We’ll show you photos of what we find and write the price before work begins.
A small section repair with underlayment replacement usually takes one day. A full re-deck on a typical Riverside single-story home takes two to three days depending on roof size and whether shingles are going back on immediately after. We’ll give you a schedule with the written estimate.
We keep GAF FeltBuster, Deck-Armor, and Tiger Paw on the truck, along with OSB and plywood decking in the common thicknesses for Riverside homes. For full re-roofs, we order exact quantities from GAF and our other manufacturer partners, including Owens Corning and CertainTeed, so nothing is left sitting on the roof overnight. Call (341) 208-3988 for a free estimate.
We use The Garrison Standard on every job, which is simple: written price before any work starts, background-checked uniformed techs inside the promised window, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. A roof should outlast the paperwork, not the other way around. If your GAF underlayment or deck needs attention in Riverside, call (341) 208-3988. A live person answers, day or night, and we’ll set up the free estimate.
